Seven Tips for Raising Free People

Meet the author

Emma Rosenthal is an educator, applied linguist, and radical homeschool advocate based in Jersey City, NJ. She has taught in the greater New York City area at a traditional public school, a high-performing urban charter, a private religious yeshivah, an international Reggio Emilia preschool, and a STEM-certified Montessori school. As a citizen and teacher, Emma has lobbied for expanded school choice and homeschooling options for families. Through these varied professional experiences, Emma has studied the impacts of different learning environments, active and passive stimuli, and adult interference on childhood development and learning outcomes. Her research focus is on how to best raise independent-minded free thinkers, each with a deep personal connection to their unique voice. Through her project, "Seven Tips for Raising Free People," Emma hopes to inspire parents and educators far and wide to choose liberty and build a learning environment for their children that will inspire them to be their very best selves.

Emma believes, foremost, in the nearly limitless potential of children. Inspired by the work of Dr. Maria Montessori, Emma advocates that adults should "follow the child" in their intellectual whims and interests, showing not a reticence but rather an eagerness to invest in their children's budding and established passions. In addition, Emma's approach to child-rearing marries East and West, drawing on popular aspects of Chinese parenting such as explicit instruction and practice in the virtue of patience. Her philosophy, while comprehensive, does allow for modifications to adhere to different family styles, value systems, and faith traditions. Her goal is to help raise a generation of children who have been trained to believe, foremost, in their power to achieve at high levels and affect change in the world. In short, "Seven Tips for Raising Free People" is about bringing out the champion, the maestro, the genius, that exists in every single child.
